Make your Fireplace a Focal Point.
By the early 1970s electric and gas fires were increasing in popularity. Then, in the mid 1970s, central heating became the must have heating system. Now we could heat the whole house, not just one room. With central heating in vogue, the big construction companies began building houses which included central heating – but left out chimneys. Suddenly every room was a square, or rectangle. No wall with a jutting chimney breast or fire surround, to use as a focal point. We had to start thinking of something else, to remove the boredom of four uninspiring, square walls.
Blending Traditional with Modern:
Over the years, high-tech electric fires have been developed, which use a fraction of the power they did 30 years ago. Living flame gas fires, which can be safely installed in houses or flats with no chimney or vents, are available. And suddenly, the opportunity to develop a focal point in the living room had returned. Fire surrounds began making a comeback.
Antique fire surrounds, Victorian cast iron surrounds, and many other traditional and modern fire surrounds, along with the most modern gas and electric fires, are available from The Antique Fireplace Restoration Company.
